When your Mac shows “Service Recommended,” or runtime has dropped off a cliff, a battery replacement brings it back to life for a fraction of a new Mac. Here’s what it costs and how to decide.
What Apple charges
Apple offers a battery-replacement service for all MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks, but is explicit that “prices and terms may vary” — the exact fee is set for your specific model, confirmed after Apple inspects the Mac. Get your real number from Apple’s Get an Estimate tool.
For a ballpark, third-party repair-cost trackers (not Apple) report Apple’s out-of-warranty battery service typically landing around:
| Model | Typical reported Apple fee |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air | ~$129–$199 |
| MacBook Pro (2016 and later) | ~$249 |
Ranges reported by third-party trackers (e.g. iFixit); not official Apple prices. Prices change and vary by region — always confirm with Apple’s Get an Estimate for your model.
When it’s free: AppleCare+ or warranty
If your Mac is covered by AppleCare+ or the standard warranty and the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity, Apple replaces it at no charge. Check your capacity first — if it’s close to 80% and you’re still covered, act before the coverage ends.
Third-party and DIY options
- Independent repair shops are often cheaper than Apple, but quality and warranty vary — use a reputable one, and ask about the battery’s origin and their guarantee.
- Apple Self Service Repair sells genuine parts and rents tools for recent models if you’re comfortable with the (fiddly, adhesive-heavy) job; you can return the old battery for a credit.
- DIY kits exist but modern MacBook batteries are glued in — it’s a real project, and a mistake with a lithium battery is dangerous.
Is it worth replacing?
If the Mac is otherwise healthy and you’ll keep it a while, a battery is one of the best-value repairs there is — far cheaper than a new Mac, and it fully restores runtime. If the Mac is already old and slow, put the money toward a replacement. See when to replace your MacBook battery and check your current health with the free battery health checker.
Make the next battery last
Whatever you pay, protect the new battery: keep Optimized Battery Charging on, avoid long stretches at 100% and high heat, and watch your health over time. See the 80% rule and how to extend battery life. Mac 4 Breakfast tracks your capacity, cycles and an unplug reminder to help.
