A MacBook battery is a consumable — it’s designed to wear out. The question is just whena replacement is worth it. Watch for these signs.
The clear signals
- “Service Recommended” in System Settings → Battery.
- Maximum capacity below ~80% — runtime is noticeably shorter.
- It won’t last your day the way it used to.
- Unexpected shutdowns, even with charge remaining.
- Swelling — a bulging case or trackpad. Stop and get it serviced now.
Cycle count as a supporting sign
A cycle count near the 1000 rating, combined with low capacity, reinforces that the battery is genuinely worn rather than just having a bad day.
Replacement options
Apple offers battery service for every model (see Apple’s support page for pricing), and reputable third-party shops are often cheaper. A replacement resets both the cycle count and the maximum-capacity reading.
Squeeze more life out first
If you’re close but not there, you can slow the decline: limit charging, keep it cool, and extend its lifespan. Mac 4 Breakfast’s health forecast estimates how long you’ve got.
